About Me


Assemblywoman Linda Carter, a lifelong resident of the city of Plainfield, was selected to serve in the New Jersey General Assembly in the 22nd Legislative District in the spring of 2018. She currently serves on two Assembly Committees: Science, Innovation and Technology Committee and the Telecommunications and Utilities Committee. The youngest of her siblings, she graduated from the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Assemblywoman Carter also holds a Master of Science degree in Management, Information Management from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken.
 
Assemblywoman Carter served as a Union County Freeholder for three terms, and she became the first African American woman to serve as the Chair of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. In 2012, she served as Vice Chair of the Freeholder Board, and also on the County’s Fiscal, Homeland and Shared Services Committees. She is also a commissioner of the Raritan Valley Rail Coalition and a commissioner of the Middlesex County Utilities Authority.
 
Prior to service on the Freeholder Board, Carter served as Councilwoman at large for the First and Fourth wards in the city of Plainfield, including the positions of Council President and Chair of the Committee of the Whole, liaison to the Housing Authority, Board of Education and Cable Advisory Board, and Chair of the Public Safety Committee and Neighborhood and City Services Committee.
 
With a focus on assisting youths and seniors, Assemblywoman Carter has received numerous awards including the New Jersey Minority Achievers Award and the Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Greater Union County Chapter Community Leaders Hall of Fame Award. She has served on the Plainfield Teen Parenting Board and has volunteered with the YMCA for more than 19 years. She has been a volunteer mentor and a Big Sister and has helped to ensure that homeless persons receive food.
 
Currently, Assemblywoman Carter is employed by the Passaic Board of Education as a High School Business Education Teacher. Prior to her career in education, she worked at AT&T in Access Management of the CFO Division, and as Portfolio Asset Manager for ATT&T Credit Communication.
 
Assemblywoman Carter is a member of the New Jersey Board of Realtors and is a lifelong member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she has served in many leadership positions including President of the Plainfield Chapter for four terms.
